But working with recycled timber products is not as straightforward as it sounds, and Kennedy’s has played a proactive role in developing industry standards and guidelines which will allow our customers to choose a truly historical product which will match their expectations.

Forest and Wood Products Australia has released long-awaited visual grading guidelines for the use of pre-loved timber. These guidelines now allow architects, designers, builders, engineers and home owners to specify recycled timber with confidence.

Kennedy’s welcomes a foundation for the safe and successful manufacture, specification and use of recycled hardwood with open arms!

These industry guidelines will alleviate the concerns of even the most cautious architects, designers, builders and specifiers, as well as their valued customers.

Timber Queensland CEO, Rod McInnes said the completion of the national recycled timber grading rules project was very timely.

“Combined with growing consumer interest in sustainable building products it was essential to address the lack of grading rules for recycled timber to encourage the safe development and growth of this industry sector.”

Mr McInnes said Timber Queensland was supported by funding from Forest and Wood Products Australia and the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry in developing a common and unified set of visual grading rules for a range of structural and decorative recycled timber hardwood timber products.

“Structural recycled timber was found to have very specific properties to ‘new’ timber, and as a result, special span tables for a number of typical recycled timber applications have now been developed and published for use by designers and builders Australia-wide.”

A Checklist for Architects

As the demand for recycled timber increases across commercial and residential projects within Australia, the need for an industry wide standard has never been more important.

The Interim Industry Standard for Recycled Timber offers manufacturers, suppliers and users specific grading guidelines.

Published by the Forest and Wood Products Australia, the primary objective of the guidelines is to provide the Australian recycled timber industry with a professional, consistent standard.

The two guidelines outline the requirements for visually grading recycled hardwood timber intended for Structural Use and Decorative Applications.

Kennedy’s is proud to have played a role in initiating, drafting and producing these practical documents.

The guidelines are the perfect tool for every architect, designer and builder.

Kennedy’s encourages all within the industry to utilise the interim standard, ensuring a benchmark for quality for all recycled timber consumers.
