Student Event Showcases Recycled Timber Knowledge

Following their recent tour of Kennedy’s Production Facility, the UQ 2011 cohort of first year architecture students invited Michael to join them on campus and examine their end of year assignments.

Held at St Lucia, the student exhibition presented a variety of original and inspiring projects, many of which incorporated the use of recycled timber.

To Michael’s delight, the collection of works included a significant display of knowledge gained from their recent visit, demonstrating an understanding of the importance of the green properties of timber and appreciation for recycled timber as a versatile building product.

Kennedy’s Timbers is proud to support a wide range of educational experiences for future generations of industry talent.

Wolston Cricket Club Pavilion

Contributing to projects of significance is a responsibility Kennedy’s Timbers is humbled by.

The recent refurbishment of the Wolston Cricket Club Pavilion is yet another shining example of such a project.

Listed on Queensland State Heritage Register, National Estate Register and National Trust of Queensland, this historic building has been fully restored, recreating its time and place in history.

Built in 1910, the pavilion is located on the grounds of the former Wolston Park Hospital complex; the earliest institution in Queensland for the treatment of mentally ill patients.

A key aspect of the institution’s philosophy was the establishment of a safe and pleasant environment in which patients could be encouraged to undertake social activities, including sport.

A celebrated national pastime, cricket provided a public face to the institution and a means by which to promote health among patients.

In recent years, the hospital site (including the pavilion) was acquired by the Queensland Police Service to house its new Police Academy.

Recognised with a 2011 Silver Heritage Council Award for Excellence, this remarkable restoration was a result of the efforts of QBuild.

Minister for Government Services and the Building Industry, Simon Finn said the QBuild team won the award for their consistent commitment and attention to detail.

“QBuild tradies and apprentices delivered this work by using traditional methods, which meant no air powered tools on site, just good old fashioned hand tools and trade skills,” Mr Finn said.

“The attention to detail in the restoration work is impressive, from the profile matching and date stamping of timber, to the recreation of turned verandah posts and sourcing of period door and window fixtures.”

“The restoration project not only provided a fascinating insight into the history of the site, but has ensured the historic integrity of the pavilion is maintained for many generations to come,” said Mr Finn.

Featuring Kennedy’s premium recycled Red Ironbark timber, the end product is one to be admired and sure to last for the next 100 years.

AIA Brisbane chapter convenes

Professional development is key to the continuing success of any industry.

The Brisbane Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects hosts a number of seminars each year, providing its members with the opportunity to remain up-to-date with current industry trends.

Delighted to have been approached, Kennedy’s Timbers presented at the final seminar for 2011.

Covering a variety of topics, the forum generated enthusiastic discussion about the need to accurately specify recycled timber and the increasing trend to design green buildings utilising the environmental credentials of recycled Australian hardwood.

In response to the presentation, Kennedy’s received strong demand from architects for additional information and timber samples contained in each of Kennedy’s Architectural Timber sample boxes.
